Can I Trust In Luck For Success or Wealth?

People play the lottery and hope to be rich, or gamble in other ways, like the stock market or ventures. They hope a turn of events will give them the lucky break. This does not guarantee success and has led many to ruin. Bible never suggest we trust in luck but shows the way that will be successful.

"By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures."  Proverbs 24:3-4.

The house is figurative of a man's affairs and all he is connected to.

FIRST
The first thing in this verse is wisdom, we do not need luck we need wisdom. True wisdom comes from God and we need to seek it from Him. The house in this verse is built by wisdom; to build something is work. You can't escape it even with wisdom you have to work.

SECOND
Understanding follows wisdom. To understand something is to take time and think about it. Again this is work- the opposite of luck.

Understanding establishes the house, to be established is something that can't be undone or taken but if we are going into debt or taking risks we are moving the wrong direction.

THIRD
Knowledge does not come easy. We need to apply ourselves to study and learn the opportunities and risks around us. We need a go back to school mentality. We need the attitude and intensity as if we were studying for our final exams and our diploma depended on it.

IT IS WORTH IT
Opportunities come and we need these three to take advantage of them; if the opportunities do not come we need these three to make them.

See the progression in the Bible verse: first the house will be built, next established and last filled, but people today want the treasures before we have built the house. Or they skip the idea of being established and go into debt and that is the opposite of being established.

Do not spend your time and money chasing luck but spend your time finding wisdom from The Almighty, develop the ability to act on the basis of understanding and knowledge. Then your life will be filled with treasures.

What Does The Bible Say About Not Paying Back Loans?

Is it OK to borrow money knowing you can't pay it back? You might get away with default or bankruptcy. But is there something else to consider?

The Bible says: "The wicked borrow and do not repay, the righteous give generously." Pslam 37:21.

WICKED
The Bible labels the person who borrows without paying back as "Wicked." This is not just a bad person or a sinner but someone who is evil. They are head and shoulders above others who do wrong.

THE WICKED PERSON STEALS
To borrow and not repay is theft and worse than theft, it is to commit deception. It adds lying to the crime of theft.

THE WICKED PERSON DOES THINGS GOD HATES
The Bible list six things that the Lord hates; these sins are above all others, but one thing is repeated twice- it is lying. (Proverbs 6:16-19). You borrow and say you will repay but you don't that is lying. It is often an ongoing lie that has to be repeated or reinforced. Often you lie to yourself first then to those you are borrowing from.

THE WICKED PERSON JOINS GOD'S ENEMY
God has an enemy, one that is your enemy too. This enemy has a weapon he uses above all others, and one he started. When we lie we are like this enemy, following his footsteps and giving him strength in evil. Satin is called the father of lies and a liar from the beginning. (John 8:44). To lie is to become one of Satin's followers in practice and to continue the process of becoming like Satin in character.

THE WICKED PERSON ROBS GOD
God is your Creator, and not only yours but the Creator of the person, or Lord over the institution you are borrowing (stealing) from. He is Creator of all wealth and Lord over all economies. If your Creator and Lord entrust blessings to another person or institution and you rob that person or institution of God's property they were entrusted with you are really robbing God- The Almighty, All-Powerful, Supreme Being, Commander of Angelic Armies. The English language does not have a word that describes such limits of stupidity.

THE WICKED PERSON HURTS OTHERS
  • You hurt the person you rob.
  • The people who know you see a liar and thief.
  • You family are hurt because you a no longer a person of character they can count on.
  • Business relations are hurt because you are a hindrance.
  • You hurt yourself because you have deceived yourself.
  • Your children and grandchildren are hurt by a tragic example they will follow.
  • Your economic future and that of your family.
  • You hurt your character.
A LAST THOUGHT
DON'T DO IT!

Are Small Lies OK If The Gain Is Great?

They say "honesty is the best policy," but what if we make an exception once in a while? Is it OK to tell a little half-truth to get a big payout? What does the Bible Say?

"A fortune made by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a deadly snare."Proverbs 21:6. NIV.

LYING TONGUE
The words "lying tongue" is a poetic phrase that pictures any deceit or falsehood. This includes any practice or act of untruth or the smallest deception- what many call a white lie or a half truth. The Bible in many places condemns lying and giving false witness.* When we say something is such and such, or that we will do so and so it must be true.

FORTUNE
A fortune may not be a massive amount of wealth it may be any treasure even of a small monetary value; the standard is the same in all cases; if the value is one dollar or one billion then lies and half-truths are condemned.

A FLEETING VAPOR
In the desert lands where these proverbs were written you might see a mirage, shimmering lights that looked like water. The desperate thirsty traveler could chase these to his death. So we may think a truth spun to our advantage may quince our need but it is ourselves we are deceiving.
A vapor is an insubstantial mist that has no tangible substance, we cannot hold it, and melts on the wind. This cannot be possessed, and soon gone.

A DEATH TRAP
Why is a fortune a deadly snare? There are always consequences to telling half-truths and lies, like you get caught and people want restitution and more, but the most compelling reason that it is a deadly snare is because God says it is. If The Lord calls something a deadly snare it is foolish to act as if it wasn't.

*Proverbs 6:16-19 , Numbers 23:19 Leviticus 19:11 (Just a few references to support the point, the list is very long).

What Does The Bible Say About Double Standards.

We want to get the most out of a bargain or we want to maximize our profit on a deal. We might think that we can change our behaviors for one situation and back for another. What does God feel about double standards?

The Bible says: "Differing weights and differing measures- the Lord detest them both." Proverbs 20:10, NIV

IN ANCIENT TIMES
An ancient merchant might have two sets of weights one would be the accepted standard the other would be heavier or lighter so that he could weigh out the grain or whatever and take advantage of an unsuspecting customer. He might have a second set of baskets or barrels with a false shallower bottom to take advantage of the unsuspecting.

Some communities had a standard weight and measures for business with the locals and a second set to use on the foreigner.

These second weights were used to take an unfair advantage of someone either through deceit or double standard.

TODAY
Today a double standard might be to have a price for friends and another for strangers, or a kickback to get a bid.

GOD
God's stand on this is clear- He "detest" them. Detest is a strong word, it suggests a strong negative reaction, that is not the response you want to have from the Almighty. Neither you nor I can expect Heaven to look with favor to the use of any double standard.

YOU
We might feel that a shifting standard may lose opportunity and profit, but a double standard loses God's favor which is the greater loss. Those who name the Lord as their God and Savor must have the highest standard of honesty and fairness in all their doings. They reject double standards in favor of a higher standard that of pleasing God.

You might say that I can gain more profit by changing the rules when it suits the situation or you can say I will do business fairly before God and let God bring the profit- which is the greater profit.
